Oil palm is one of the world’s most important fruit crops. Malaysia is one of the largest producers and exporter of palm oil in the world, accounting for 30% of the world’s traded edible oils and fats supply. Palm oil industries in Malaysia have good potential for high pressure modern power plants and the annual power generation potential is about 8,000 GWh. Malaysia produced more than 20 million tonnes of palm oil in 2012 over 5 million hectares of land.
The palm oil industry is a significant branch in Malaysian agriculture. Almost 70% of the volume from the processing of fresh fruit bunch is removed as waste in the form of empty fruit bunches (EFBs), fibers and shells, as well as liquid effluent. Fibres and shells are traditionally used as fuels to generate power and steam. Effluents are sometimes converted into biogas that can be used in gas-fired gensets.
Palm oil industry generates vast amount of palm biomass. However a considerable portion of this biomass is not feasible to contribute for commercial power generation due to the logistic concerns. Therefore, converting palm biomass from scattered estates into a uniform and solid fuel called “Biomass Briquettes” through condensing process appears to be an attractive solution in upgrading its properties and add value. Palm biomass briquette could be the ideal renewable energy fuel source for co-firing in our coal-fired power plants.
How to utilize palm oil wastes and residues,palm shell?
In a typical palm oil mill in Malaysia, crude palm oil is extracted from fresh fruit bunches (FFB) by a mechanical process. The palm oil waste stream generated by this process consists of 22% empty fruit bunches (EFB), 5% palm kernel shells (PKS) and 13% mesocarp fibers. In most cases palm kernel shell and mesocarp fibres are used as fuel in the mill, generating enough steam for the sterilizers and electricity for running the mill.
In the process to extract crude palm oil and palm kernel from the fresh fruit bunch (FFB), considerable amounts of by-products such as fiber, shell, empty fruit bunch (EFB) and palm oil mill effluent are also generated as shown in Table below.
